Geo-anchored AI queries explained

If your AI visibility test does not name Australia or your region, you may be measuring US answers. Geo-anchored prospect queries keep the check honest for Australian businesses.

Updated 11 Aug 2026 Pillar: AI visibility audits

In short: A geo-anchored AI query is a prospect-style question that explicitly names a country, state, or city. On Radar generates and pins those queries for each domain so live engine checks (and monthly tracking) stay Australia-relevant and comparable over time.

What “geo-anchored” means

Geo-anchoring is putting the place in the prompt, not hoping the model guesses your market from an IP address or a vague “near me”.

Weak: “Who is a good electrician for a switchboard upgrade?”

Geo-anchored: “Who is a good electrician in Adelaide for a switchboard upgrade?”

The second question forces grounded assistants to retrieve and reason about Australian (or Adelaide) suppliers. The first often drifts to whichever market the engine treats as default — frequently the United States.

Why this matters for Australian AI visibility tests

  • Default geography bias — many search-grounded products and training mixes skew US-heavy.
  • Local intent — Australian buyers ask with suburbs, cities, and “Australia” in the sentence. Your test should match that.
  • Fair competitor set — without a geo anchor, “competitors” in the answer may be irrelevant overseas brands.
  • Honest scores — recommending a Sydney clinic for a Brisbane prospect query is a miss; a US-only answer set is noise.

That is why On Radar treats geo-anchoring as a product rule, not a content tip. See also how an AI visibility audit works.

Prospect queries vs branded queries

Type Includes your brand name? Job
Prospect (geo-anchored) No Would AI recommend you to someone who does not know you yet?
Branded Yes Does AI know you when asked about you directly?

Never put the business’s own name in a prospect query. That test is covered separately. For the buyer-angle how-to, read Would ChatGPT recommend my business?

How On Radar pins the query set

  1. Generate once — for each domain, On Radar creates a fixed set: typically five prospect queries plus one branded query.
  2. Geo-anchor every prospect query — each one names the country or a relevant region so engines do not silently go US-default.
  3. Reuse every audit — the same set is pinned so month N compares to month N−1. No silent rewrite on every load.
  4. Reset only when the business materially changes — for example a real change to business name, industry, or location that warrants a new baseline.

That pinning rule is what makes AI visibility tracking a time series instead of a random chat log.

Examples (good vs weak)

Weak (ambiguous geography) Geo-anchored (AU-ready)
Best family dentist near me Best family dentist in Hobart, Australia
Who installs solar batteries? Who installs home solar batteries in regional Victoria?
Marketing agency for tradies Marketing agency for tradies in Melbourne, Australia

Keep buyer language. Add place. Leave your brand out of the prospect set.

What geo-anchoring does not fix

  • A weak site still loses to clearer local competitors — fix on-page and Local SEO gaps from the audit first.
  • One lucky ChatGPT reply is not a baseline — pin and re-run the same set.
  • Maps pack ranking is a different job — geo-anchored AI queries do not replace Google Business Profile work.

FAQ

What is a geo-anchored AI query?

A prospect-style question that explicitly names a country, state, or city so grounded AI assistants do not default to another market’s results.

Why do AI engines default to US results?

Many tools and datasets skew US-heavy. Vague prompts without a place often resolve to US sources unless you force the location in the query.

Does On Radar change my prospect queries every month?

No. Each domain gets one pinned set, reused for tracking. Regeneration is only on an explicit baseline reset when the business profile materially changes.

Should prospect queries include my business name?

No. Prospect queries test recommendations to people who do not already know you. Use a separate branded query for name recognition.
